Project Background

KanPak: Supporting Growth in Aseptic Food Processing
What began as a 20,000-square-foot production facility has grown into a 250,000-square-foot aseptic processing and packaging operation in Penn Yan, NY. Costich Engineering has been a trusted partner since the facility’s inception in 2002, guiding multiple phases of expansion within the Horizon Park Drive Business Park, a Yates County IDA development area.

Comprehensive Engineering Services
Our team provided surveying, civil engineering, and landscape architecture services across every phase of development. From conceptual site designs to final construction documents, Costich delivered functional solutions for utilities, grading, erosion control, vehicular circulation, landscaping, and lighting. Each expansion required careful planning to support KanPak’s growth while maintaining efficient site operations.

Specialized Design Expertise
We prepared detailed engineer’s reports and designs for wastewater treatment systems, oil/water separators, and RPZ backflow prevention. Additional services included ALTA surveys, construction stakeout, observation, and SWPPP inspections. These elements ensured regulatory compliance and long-term functionality for the expanding facility.

Project Background

Protecting Sodus Point: Flood Resilience Through REDI Funding
The WA 30 Wickham Boulevard and Greig Street project was developed to address the severe flooding that impacted the Village of Sodus Point in 2017 and 2019 due to rising Lake Ontario water levels. With grant funding from the New York State Lake Ontario Resiliency and Economic Development Initiative (REDI), Costich Engineering delivered multidisciplinary services to strengthen community resilience while maintaining access to businesses, residences, and waterfront amenities.

Survey, Engineering, and Design Services
Our land survey team provided the detailed boundary, topographic, and utility mapping necessary to guide design and permitting. Civil engineering efforts focused on expanding and upgrading the storm sewer network to function under both normal and high-water conditions. Landscape architecture services were integrated into the overall site plan, supporting the design of walkways, seating areas, and streetscape elements that enhance community use while contributing to flood protection.

Stormwater and Flood Control Improvements
The project introduced new storm sewers that direct runoff and floodwaters to outfalls along Sodus Bay. Under normal conditions, water passes through catch basins, pre-treatment structures, and storm sewers before reaching the bay. During flood events, gravity outfalls are closed, and pumping systems convey water to the bay, ensuring continued functionality.

Community and Environmental Benefits
The improvements reduce flood risks, protect public infrastructure, and sustain access during periods of high water. Green infrastructure elements — such as sumps and erosion control at outfalls — minimize sediment and debris entering Sodus Bay, improving watershed health. In addition, new sidewalks, crosswalks, and the integrated seatwall enhance pedestrian safety and create a more accessible, resilient public space.

Newark, NY, March 11, 2024 – New York Sea Grant has announced a “Great Lakes Resilience Case Studies” video series featuring successful green infrastructure and flood resilience projects in three upstate communities.

Sodus Point is the village with the lowest elevation along Lake Ontario’s southern shoreline. Following the high-water event in 2017, the Village of Sodus Point enlisted New York Sea Grant to facilitate a public engagement process that empowered local officials to identify ways to protect the village from future flooding. In the “Sodus Point’s Flood Resilience: A Case Study in Community Strength” video, Sodus Point Mayor Dave McDowell, resident Laurie Hayden, and Sarah Costich of Costich Engineering, Land Surveying & Landscape Architecture share how installing green infrastructure elements, a larger storm sewer system, flood wall, and sand dune have benefited the village.

McQuaid Jesuit Outdoor Commons: Extending Learning Beyond the Classroom
The McQuaid Jesuit High School Outdoor Commons transforms underutilized space into a dynamic plaza for learning, dining, and social interaction. Completed in 2017 as part of a larger campus master planning effort, the project mirrors the school’s indoor commons and cafeteria, extending their functions into a thoughtfully designed outdoor environment.

Survey, Civil Engineering, and Landscape Architecture Services
Costich Engineering provided comprehensive services beginning with detailed land surveying to guide site planning. Civil engineering addressed grading, drainage, and circulation improvements, ensuring functionality across the sloped site. Landscape architecture shaped the commons into a student-focused gathering space with walkways, seating areas, and outdoor classrooms that connect seamlessly to adjacent indoor spaces and the athletic complex.

Responsive Campus Design
The design reflects a responsive approach — aligning outdoor uses with the school’s existing architecture while solving practical site challenges. The result is a commons that not only enhances student life but also improves pedestrian circulation and strengthens connectivity across campus.

Designed to serve as both a hub for travelers and a showcase for regional culture, the site provides amenities operated by the New York Kitchen — Taste NY Market, highlighting locally sourced food and beverages.
