WA 30 Wickham Blvd & Greig Street

A New York State Lake Ontario Resiliency and Economic Development (REDI) Project

Client: Village of Sodus Point, New York
Construction Completion: November 2021

Project Services: Land Survey, Landscape Architecture, Civil Engineering, Schematic Design, Design Development, Construction Documentation & Construction Observation

Project Background

The Village of Sodus Point residents, businesses, tourists, sportspersons and boating enthusiasts have all suffered from the flooding impacts that occurred in 2017 and 2019 as a result of the high Lake Ontario water levels. In order to mitigate these flooding effects in the future, the Village of Sodus Point was awarded grant funding through the NYS Lake Ontario Resiliency and Economic Development Initiative (REDI).

The WA. 30 Wickham Blvd. and Greig St. project will replace and add storm sewers throughout the Village. New storm sewers will convey rainwater and flood water to existing and new outfall areas. During non-flood events, water will flow from streets to catch basins, then to storm sewers with some pre-treatment, and finally to Sodus Bay outfalls. During flood events, gravity outfalls will be closed off, then stormwater and flood water will be pumped to Sodus Bay. In order to convey water to drainage inlets, new pavements, gutters, curbs, sidewalks and grading are all necessary improvements so the drainage area functions properly. In the Wickham Boulevard area, a new integrated seatwall, sidewalk, and curb will serve as a protection measure from flooding and erosion. These improvements will also serve as a pedestrian link between the Greig Street businesses/residences and the Wickham Boulevard residences/County Beach.

The project enhances the storm drainage system for the areas prone to flooding along and adjacent to Greig Street and Wickham Boulevard. The proposed improvements will benefit the Village community by providing flood risk reduction to the roadways, thus allowing residents, businesses, community members and tourists to continue in utilizing the area during periods of high water. The implemented storm system will also benefit the adjoining water body by reducing the amount of sediment and debris entering the bay through a series of practices within the design. Green infrastructure will be incorporated to allow for pre-treatment of drainage runoff. New structures will have sumps to allow for
the collection of sediment and debris, and erosion control practices will be incorporated at the proposed outfall structures. The project will also enhance the pedestrian experience with the addition of new sidewalks, crosswalks, seatwall and plantings.

Press Release

Newark, NY, March 11, 2024 – New York Sea Grant has announced a “Great Lakes Resilience Case Studies” video series featuring successful green infrastructure and flood resilience projects in three upstate communities.

Sodus Point is the village with the lowest elevation along Lake Ontario’s southern shoreline. Following the high-water event in 2017, the Village of Sodus Point enlisted New York Sea Grant to facilitate a public engagement process that empowered local officials to identify ways to protect the village from future flooding. In the “Sodus Point’s Flood Resilience: A Case Study in Community Strength” video, Sodus Point Mayor Dave McDowell, resident Laurie Hayden, and Sarah Costich of Costich Engineering, Land Surveying & Landscape Architecture share how installing green infrastructure elements, a larger storm sewer system, flood wall, and sand dune have benefited the village.
